A few days ago, I returned home to hear that annoying sound
of the chirping of a smoke detector (so I thought…) when a battery has died. I
immediately got my ladder & removed the battery. Then I heard the chirping
yet again. How is that possible? I wondered. And then I saw my carbon monoxide
detector and realized it was making the noise. I replaced the battery in the
other CO detector, and sure it enough, it started chirping too, although it had
a different chirp. All quite alarming. I called PSE, and within less then 10
minutes someone was at my house to check on things. Great service, I was so
impressed.
The first thing he did was read the back of the detector,
which clearly states what the various chirps represent. Mine was just an old
detector. It never occurred to me that they had a shelf life or to read the
back, my smoke detector works perfectly fine after over 30 years… Check all
your detectors and make sure that are not outdated, and that they have fresh
batteries. I have installed new dual (smoke and CO) detectors.
