Getting Know(sey) with a Local, Independant Business

This month I am happy to present DCI. I have had the privledge of working with Larry, Cheryl and Julie for all my insurance needs for decades! They also happen to be clients of mine! I have truly appreciated the ability to call up a a person I know and ask questions and get advice when I have had ( or thought I might) have a claim. DCI know insurance and they will take good care of your needs.

What is the history of your business? How did you start it and why? Your motivation/ dream for it?

DCI was started in October of 2016 by the Janowiczs and Crystal Stevenson. Prior to that, we were known as Soundview Insurance. Way back in the day, my parents Larry and Cheryl started an Independent insurance agency to help people who didn’t qualify for insurance with captive agents like State Farm and Allstate. That was in the 1980’s. Today, it has grown and evolved so much! While my parents are still involved in the business, Crystal Stevenson and I are in charge of the day to day operations. Our dream is to keep growing our business, providing excellent insurance products for our clients, and creating jobs in our beautiful state.

What is your top seller?

I would have to say that our top seller is packaged policies. We have a Personal Insurance and Commercial Insurance department, and we are split pretty evenly between them. The tv commercials don’t lie – it really is best to package your policies. On the personal insurance side, that looks like having your Homeowners, Auto, Umbrella, and Rental properties all with one carrier. For the commercial side, that looks like having your General Liability, Commercial Auto, and Umbrella packaged together. In addition to insurance packages, or “bundles,” Earthquake Insurance has been really popular on the Personal insurance side, and Cyber Liability has been something that we recommend to every business owner.

What is your favorite part of running this business?

There are a few things. I have been working here for over a decade, and we have clients that started with us near the beginning of my career. It is always fun to be there for my clients for their big life changes, like purchasing their first home or adding a new engagement ring for a fiancé. We also have some clients who have been with us 30+ years, so it is always fun to me to hear how they met Crystal or my parents. As the office manager, I am also creating new processes that help our clients out, so I am very excited to be doing something that benefits people.

How has COVID impacted your business?

Like every other business, we were impacted. While we were fortunate to be able to work remote (and we are all still working remote), we were impacted because there were so many businesses that closed down and/or cancelled their policies so it was like a trickle-down effect. We really spent a lot of time communicating between our clients and their insurance carriers to see what sort of relief options were out there.
